Pyramid Heart EP
ONCE NINA’s debut EP, “Pyramid Heart” (produced by Meghan Toohey) is a bewitching tour de force of alt-mystic-dream-pop in the tradition of Stevie Nicks & Mazzy Star—with PJ Harvey-esque edge.
The songs are both a call to action & a healing balm to the magic-hungry heart. Nina Kurtz’s emotive vocals act as incantations—powerful, searing & true, bringing key moments into focus with her chill-inducing vibrato. Toohey’s production is tasteful & tender, moving from artfully sparse to pleasurably lush. Shimmering keys & occasional haunting lapsteel cascade over gritty guitar, settling like a spell over a bed of dynamic rhythms.
Lyrically, Kurtz explores topics as timely as technology addiction (“I only get half of your glances baby / one eye is on me / the other’s on your device…”) and as timeless as psychological enslavement (“Can’t take the history off of my face / lineage of pain easy to retrace.”)
“Pyramid Heart” is a transportive six-song journey of personal revelation & cosmic awakening, brightened by a generous helping of playful whimsy. Cathartic & lovingly crafted, with hooks that call the listener back for more, Kurtz leaves us with an empowering message (“take these bones to the sea / the end of slavery is in me.”) ONCE you start listening, this Pyramid will nest in your heart.
